A new political party will be launched in the coming months, according to former election candidate, Lorie A. Rymer.

During an interview with BVI Platinum News, Mr. Rymer confirmed that he is a member of the new political party, but could not divulge more information about membership until a planned launch ceremony.

Mr. Rymer was a member of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) up until 2011 when he contested the Ninth District seat against now Opposition Leader and VIP Chairman, Hon. Ralph T. O'Neal.

Hon. O'Neal did not participate in the recent No Confidence Motion brought against the National Democratic Party (NDP) by his opposition colleague, Hon. Julian Fraser, Third District Representative. The decision has fueled the conversation of a successor leader for the VIP.

"It's a pity that it appears now the Virgin Islands Party has no real leader. It appears to be rather leaderless and the other members apparently seem to think that enough is enough and that they should move on and I agree with that," Mr. Rymer stated.

He added that it shows there is need for another party to come forward and "I am certain that one soon will".

"The Virgin Islands Party has let down its membership and on the other hand, you have the NDP and they have lost their way on a number of matters and so we are going to look forward to the founding of a new party, which formation will be announced in the not too distant future," Mr. Rymer stated.

He stated that he couldn't comment any further on information regarding the new party.

"All I am able to tell you is that there is a new party being founded as we now speak, which is going to carry forward the governance of the Virgin Islands of the future for the people of the Virgin Islands, having been abandoned and left behind by the Virgin Islands Party and having seen how easily the NDP has lost its way, Mr. Rymer stated.

He revealed that they are going to have an official launch probably before the end of the year, but could not divulge the name of the party at the moment.

He expressed the view that the party itself would want to field candidates, apart form being a pressure group.

Has any of our disgruntled bros and Siss in this country stop to think that you can effectuate change in a country without being a politician? What about just doing grassroots work and volunteering around the country. You would be move effective, have a greater voice and respected this way.... more

I agree with grassroots efforts and private ventures to help communities. Trouble is that those who want to organize small groups to do projects now have to register as "official" complete with accountant based on the new act to "make sure no one is laundering terrorist money". rediculous! The problem is not the parties we have it is the people in the parties. Bringing a new party does not necessarily mean new and fresh ideas. One of the most important things to consider is whether these people -old or new - have the political will to do anything. Everyone seems to want to be... more

Nothing is wrong with having another choice of party instead of voting in X only to switch to Y four years later and then back to X again. We will have to wait and see how all this turns out.

the problem with both current parties is that neither have been held accountable. no one has gone to jail for wrongdoing, no one has been punished for ignoring laws on the books, friends and family get special treatment, conflict of interest is rampant. complaints dept is ignored by the very... more

Pete you are so correct and spot on ! I could not have said it any better ! We have a culture of corruption which is self serving and our government members disregard the very laws they created ! So they have all place themselves above the law and include their family and cronies.. The laws only... more

Pete you are right. We need measures in place for accountability and I'm glad to see the protocols and other things being pushed by the UK. It wouldn't matter which party is elected if they all can still do what the hell they want. The politicians and parties are not the problem in the BVI. The... more

excellent analogy with the roads!! understanding the laws and how gov works will create the structure of expectation which officials can work with. BVI does need change that is for sure.

However I'm not sure if its a new party or NEW People who are (1) honest in their hearts and minds (2) Business Savvy (3) Political Savvy

Recycling is for plastic

BVI needs to give some new people a chance.

And get rid of this district

The populace are dishonest but you want them to vote for honest representation? HA!! I wish you luck with that nonsense. The voters in this country do not care about the country. There are many who vote on issues but the vast majority vote based on what they can get or petty personal foolishness.... more

NDP is a new party. They were launched in 1999 and served their first stint in Government in 2003, only 10yrs ago. New Party again? Please! I'm not that shallow minded my friend it's just simple common sense and fact. NDP is in fact a new party and if that's what people think the country need then they're in big big trouble. Most people are just trying to position to call the shots that's what it's about. When you hear the real... more

We do need a new party with new ideas to shake up the duopoly of NDP and VIP. However, with respect, I am not sure that re-tread politicians like Mr Rymer are the answer. We need *new people* with *new ideas*. It is time for a new generation of young leaders in the BVI to step forward and serve.
