(PLTM) - Team Indigo, which hails from Ocean Surfari Charters, copped top placement for their catch of six marlins in the first annual Virgin Gorda International Marlin Tournament, which ended on August 23rd 2016. The team walked away with a cash prize of $1680 and the title of the inaugural competition.

The three day competition which began on August 21st, was organised by the BVI Sports Fishing Association. The competition saw a total of eight boats participating.

Second place and a cash prize of $1400 went to Team Rukus, while Team Venator took third place along with $1120.

The competition also gave an award of $350 for the boats which brought in the most catch on each competition day. First place for this category went to Indigo, second place went to Venator and Rukus took third.

Ceon Hartman of Team Indigo was named best angler of the competition.

The competition also featured international fishing judge, Stephan Petit out of St. Martin.

Secretary of the association, Ms. Adrianna Stevens said although the competition did not receive as much participants as they hoped for, it was still a success. She stated the timing of the competition was a disadvantage.

“I think the event was a very successful one. We had a limit of 18-20 boats, but with other tournaments happening around the same time, locally and next door, that affected us a bit.”

She added, “The tournament will be an every year tournament, but it will not happen around this exact time again. We will move it up to earlier in the month [August]."

Nonetheless, she commended all the persons who participated in the competition.

“To the persons who came out and participated in this event, we are ever grateful. This was the competition's first year and I’m happy and excited about how successful it turned out to be.”
