(PLTM) - A team of ten boys between the ages of 16 and 18 returned to the Territory earlier today, September 19 with top prizes and the title of Champions for the 2016 Allen D. Burke Foundation Basketball Tournament.

The team left the Territory last week to participate in the tournament held in St. Croix. The tournament officially began on Friday, 16th September and ended last evening, Sunday, 18th September.

The team played a total of 3 games and dominated in all three.

The tournament saw other teams from St. Croix, St. Thomas and North Carolina.

In the midst of celebrating the win, Kennedy Bass, Head Coach of the team said, “The guys came out ready to go and ready to play. They did their best and came out on top.”

He added, “This win means a lot to basketball in the BVI. These guys play the sport regularly and some are hoping to further their education along with a career in the sport.”

The team also secured the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the league, which went to Stephon Caul.

An overjoyed Caul said this win is the result of all the hard work and determination endured by the team.

“This win makes me feel good; I’m glad. The work we put in is what we got out. I know what I work for so I expected results. This means a lot towards my future in basketball.”

As a congratulatory gesture, the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (DYAS) met the winners at the Terrance B. Lettsome Airport and treated them to a mini motorcade through town, which ended at the Administration Building.

Acting Director of DYAS, Ms. Brenda Lettsome-Tye reiterated the department’s aim to support the Territory’s young athletes, regardless of what sport they participate in.

“We are extremely proud of this team. They went abroad, met their opponents and came out on top. We applaud them and will continue to support them.”
