(PLTM) - The roads on Virgin Gorda (VG), particularly the main road, are in dire need of street lights, according to Hon. Dr. Hubert O’Neal, Ninth District Representative. He made the call in the presence of Communications and Works Minister, Hon. Mark Vanterpool.

“...To our visitors, you know Virgin Gorda is the tourist capital of the BVI and it used to pain us as Virgin Gordians---we had to see our visitors traverse this road (Lee Road) at nights, going to restaurants and so on for dinner,” he said, adding, “But to have them traversing the roads without no sidewalks, the danger and risk involved in traversing the road, not only having sidewalks, but no street lighting…We need street lights.”

In response, Minister Vanterpool said that they are about to embark on installing solar street lights in the North Sound area and they will look into the main road on Virgin Gorda.

“Yes, I think that we want to do that on this road…It will be a road that will have all the utilities, sidewalk and so on to make it safe and passable. The lighting will be in consideration for there as we are getting ready to install some lights on North Sound under our solar programme,” the Minister said.

“The lights are here…but this road will also be considered for proper lighting as the member for the district said…I am sure that this will not be the last I hear about it, so we will be working to make the road safer, passable.”

Dr. O’Neal indicated that the road is where most of the commercial activities take place and the overall redevelopment is pleasing to the people of Virgin Gorda.

A $1,664,855.50 contract was inked between government and Creative Builders Ltd. to allow for works on the Lee Road, which will be completed within eight months.

The contract was signed under the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) $15.6M loan project.

The works will include clearing the land; demolishing and rebuilding concrete drains; reconstructing 650m of concrete road pavement; construction of 441m of reinforced concrete box drains; 93m of reinforced concrete swale drain; a twin HDPE pipe culvert including manholes; construction of two reinforced concrete box culverts; and fabrication of metal gratings over box drains.
