(PLTM) - Every Grade Four student of every primary school, both public and private, are now equipped with an Oxford Students Dictionary, compliments the Rotary Clubs based in the British Virgin Islands. This distribution is a part of a longstanding initiative piloted by the Rotary Club of Road Town, and later included the Rotary Club Sunrise and the Rotary Club of Tortola. It also falls under the clubs’ theme of Basic Education and Literacy. During a brief ceremony at the Enis Adams Primary School earlier today, September 30, President of the Rotary Club of Road Town, Ms. Nelcia St. Jean encouraged the students to take full advantage of their gifts. “They give you an opportunity to learn new words, learn how to write new sentences and it is really important for you to know what you’re saying and how you’re saying it.” Acting Chief Education Officer, Mrs. Connie George, who was also present at the school, noted that the clubs’ contributions to the primary schools across the Territory falls in line with the Ministry’s aim to improve the reading capabilities of the students at the primary level. Ms. George also offered words of encouragement, motivating the students to utilize their new dictionaries for their personal development. “Reading, spelling, the English language, is the bottom line to success in academia. If you cannot read or understand, then regardless of what subject, you will not see your progress.” She added, “It is important that you utilize them wisely and use them to better your vocabulary, to learn new words and use them in your stories, compositions and when you speak.”
