The Womens League is in support of Breast Cancer Awareness

(PLTM) - The opening of the 2016 Women’s Football League saw the athletes partnering with the BVI Cancer Society to raise awareness of breast cancer in the Territory. The league kicked off last weekend, October 15 at the A. O. Shirley Recreational Grounds. In brief remarks, President of the BVI Cancer Society, Mrs. Gloria Fahie said, “I just want to thank you all for partnering with the Cancer Society. I’m glad you young ladies are active, as the more active you are, the less likelihood there is of you getting cancer. Women rock.” International advocate and spokesperson for breast cancer, Mrs. Shondia McFadden-Sabari also encouraged the women to continue excelling in the game and contributing to the breast cancer awareness movement. “I want to encourage everyone to try and push the BVI football community forward, to have a vision, so we can grow the women’s game and all football together.” The game that followed was a further indication of how women’s football is developing, as the Ballstars defeated the Panthers 2-1 in an entertaining match, full of excitement, speed and skill. The weekend also saw the continuation of the men’s league, with Islanders maintaining their unbeatable steak against VG United, 4-0. Andy Davis opened the scoring in the first half and further goals came in the second from Kevin Fisher, Devon Leteen and Nano Ottley. In another game, Wolues crushed the Panthers 5-0, with goals coming from Kevin Carragher (2), Marc Savage (2) and James Drury. On Sunday, October 16, the Rebels defeated One Love, 3-2. D’Angelo Thomas and Joel Williams (2) scored for the Rebels. Richard Morgan scored twice for One Love and has now joined Kevin Fisher and Mohammed Kachour as the league’s joint top scorers, with 5 goals each. The Sugar Boys rounded out the weekend with a 2-1 victory over Old Madrid, courtesy of goals from Mohammed Kachour and Terrence Nanton, who scored the winning goals from the penalty spot.
