(PLTM) - Despite no concrete date when the first non-stop flight between Miami and Beef Island will take off, BVI Airways (BVIA) has commenced hiring and training BVI residents to serve as cabin crew. The government has invested $7 million into the initiative, with hopes that this will significantly give airlift a push. Today, October 19, BVI Airways stated that they have started hiring and training their initial class of BVI resident cabin crew. The company stated that after a two part interview process conducted in September, BVIA selected four BVI residents as the first class of cabin crew that will serve on BVI Airways’ AVRO (RJ) 100 jets. Training started yesterday in the Virgin Islands and will continue next week in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The intensive and rigorous training protocols are focused on passenger and aircraft safety, first aid, customer service and emergency procedures. Youth Employment Services under the Government’s Ministry of Education and Culture played a pivotal role in identifying cabin crew candidates. “The hiring and training of our cabin crew is one of the key milestones as we prepare to begin operations in the Virgin Islands,” said President and CEO of BVIA, Jerry Willoughby. He added, “Our primary goal was to recruit customer service and safety centric personnel who reflect the spirit and essence of the BVI—we are delighted that our first class of BVI residents exceeded our goals.” Over the ensuing months, BVIA expects to quadruple the number of cabin crew. The next class of cabin crew is scheduled to start training in late November.
