(PLTM) - Athletes all across the British Virgin Islands are receiving hefty investments in their various sporting disciplines, this time being the young footballers in the Territory having the opportunity to be coached and advised by top FIFA footballer and Ireland legend, former Liverpool player, Ronnie Whelan.

Whelan’s visit, made possible by the Wolues Football Club in conjunction with the Sea Cows Bay Manatees, will see young persons between the ages 4-15 receive special training and motivational sessions from the football veteran through a two-day youth coaching clinic on October 25 and 26 at the A. O. Shirley Grounds.

The clinic, which has already attracted over 40 young footballers, will also see the participants compete in a 6-a-side tournament after the final day.

Whelan’s visit will also assist in raising awareness of the Manatees’ movement, and raise funds for the cause.

The Sea Cows Bay Manatees is a programme that caters to young persons from all over the Territory, who are intrigued by the sport and want to learn more about the game and its rules.

In an interview with BVI Platinum News, Whelan said, “It’s amazing to see children so excited and full of enthusiasm; parents' support and lots of coaches giving their support. You never know, one day all of this training, education and work will benefit persons from the BVI to make it far in the football world.”

He added, “It’s a start; the kids are being coached the proper way. If you don’t start at a young age, you begin to lose them around 12 or 13. Times have changed. It’s to get them out the house from all the video games and what’s not; get out and play. Can’t stay in the house all day; get up and do something.”

Member of the Wolues Football Club, Mr. Alessandro Palladino said the team is delighted to host the legend and for young athletes in the Territory to have an opportunity to have a conversation and meet someone who has been where they want to go.

“His visit is for the kids to see him [Whelan], someone who has been through it all, to look at him and have him as a role model and speak to him and seek advice.”

Various coaches in the BVI also underwent training, facilitated by Mr. Pat Malone of Premier Skills in Ireland.

“We are here to assist and improve the football structure here and try to raise funds for the programme.”
