Kenyatta Boynes, surrounded by police and prison officers following the verdict, Tuesday, October 25, 2016

(PLTM) - Kenyatta Boynes has been found guilty of the execution style murder of Paul Prentice and attempted murder of another young man on Waterfront Drive on the night of December 14, 2014. Boynes, 32, also known as Yhats, heard his fate following a trial in the High Court this afternoon, Tuesday, October 25, 2016. The verdict was delivered by the forewoman of the nine-member jury.

The jury started deliberations at 12:30 pm and finished around 3:00 pm. Boynes was represented by Attorney-at-Law Patrick Thompson and the case was prosecuted by Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms. Kim Hollis, QC and Senior Crown Counsel, Leslie Ann Faulkner. This is the new DPP's first case since arriving in the Territory in late August.

The Lower Estate resident is scheduled to be sentenced on December 19th by Justice Nicola Byer.

The crown had contended that Boynes, on the night of the shooting, went at Aaron's Car Rental on Waterfront Drive to shoot and kill the other young man, but at the time, Prentice, 22, was also sitting on the porch. During the shooting, Prentice was killed as he was running for his life. The intended target, the other young man escaped injury.

It was the crown's case that Boynes wanted to kill the young man over a handful of missing marijuana. The young man was the prosecution's star witness and he told the court that he saw the shooter's eyes and it was that of Boynes. He also said that he saw that the shooter had dreadlocks. The shooter's face was partially hidden. However, in his defense, Boynes denied any involvement in the shooting. He had also claimed that he was with his girlfriend during that time and only learnt of the shooting after his friends telephoned him about it that night. It was also suggested that the young man (intended target) had problems with other persons, including with a group of boys in Baughers Bay. The court had also heard of a shooting some three weeks prior to the fatal shooting, which involved the S.O.B group, who usually hang out at the car rental. It was stated that the Baughers Bay boys came after members of S.O.B by shooting in the area.
