(PLTM) - The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force is at a standstill in their recruitment process, as their efforts have been foiled by the lack of interest displayed by locals. This is according to Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Julian Fraser.

While addressing his constituents earlier this month, the Representative for the Third District explained that although he is strongly against the force bringing in trained personnel from overseas, he highly doubts any locals will join the force.

As earlier reported, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Michael Matthews had disclosed his intention to recruit 30 police officers, with 10 being transferees from regional bodies and 20 being recruited locally.

Hon. Fraser noted that the disinterest in the profession by residents stems from a culture of lack of trust in law enforcement, where persons remain mindful of things done by police officers locally and around the world.

“I'm at a stage where I'm past all of that and I want all of you to reach that stage as well. Police officers are professionals and they should act accordingly. If they fail to do so, then there are repercussions and they should be punished like everyone else.”

He added, “In 2016 we cannot staff our own police force! He [Commissioner] is not going to find 20 [officers] here locally. I am one who advocates fully, that whatever our police department wants, our police department should have. There is no need for our police to be deprived of full staff, but I don't see any locals rushing to join the police force.”

Hon. Fraser was questioned as to the importance of the BVI Cadet Core and whether or not these youths are being trained to possibly take up positions in the local police force. He however explained that the core has no connection with the Virgin Islands Police Force.

“There was a point made when the Cadet Core was established, that it has no connection with the police department. It's left to be seen if there can be any transition in the disciplinary training that they got and liking towards policing and wanting to join the police force.”
