(PLTM) - After several months of delay, works are expected to restart on the new Nurse Iris O’Neal Medical Centre on Virgin Gorda (VG), next week.

BVI Platinum News understands that the steel frame, which was noted as the hold up, arrived on island and is already on the work site.

Earlier this month, Hon. Ronnie Skelton, Minister of Health and Social Development informed the House of Assembly that the revised cost for the project is now $6,086,377.89, which he said represents an increase of $116,690.50 over the original cost.

The additional cost covers rock blasting and minor adjustments to accommodate clinical requirements, among other things.

He also spoke to the new completion date from the projected December date, where he disclosed that the project should be substantially completed by May of next year, followed by a grand opening in July.

The ground breaking ceremony took place back in March 2015, two months before the general elections, and the project was expected to be completed within 18 months.

According to the Health Ministry, the new clinic is expected to operate 24 hours per day and offer emergency care, family care, mental and radiology, among other services.

The contractor is James Todman Construction Ltd.
