Cynthia Williams, Breast Cancer Survivor

(PLTM) - Research shows that for persons affected with illness, fear and worry tend to play a huge part in the patient’s physical and mental state, and quite often encourages them to give up on life and eventually lose life itself.

This was not the case for Ms. Cynthia Williams, 47, a woman seen as a champion in life, a warrior with the scars to show, a living survivor of the dreadful cancer.

Cynthia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and underwent a mastectomy on her left breast in early 2012.

Strange enough, unlike many cancer patients, Cynthia never grew worried or feared what the future holds, as she stated, “Cancer was not going to be the death of me.”

She said, “When I found out I was not surprised or scared. I have seen and heard so much about it and my mom had cancer. I wasn't sitting and waiting for it, but when I was told I have it, I was like, okay.”

She added, “I sat in my car and told my bosses what the doctors had said, that it's cancer and they were even more scared than I was. They told me to stop driving for fear I crash or black out, but I just kept going about my day. Cancer was not about to scare me.”

Throughout her treatment, Cynthia explained that there were no drastic changes in her daily routine, other than additional and longer doctor visits.

“Life for me was totally the same. I listened to exactly what my doctors told me, what to do and what to eat. The only thing changed was that I lost a lot of weight, but I went about my normal life.”

She explained that too often, persons who are affected by the disease beat up on themselves with worry, fear and have so many unanswered questions such as ‘why me’.

“This is why most persons have an awful experience and sometimes end up losing their life. I didn't worry. Yes, cancer is bad, but I wasn't about to let it take my joy or my life.”

Cynthia further explained that her battle with cancer was made even easier, thanks to the strong support she received from her employers, friends and the BVI Cancer Society.

“I don’t have any family here, but my bosses, their kids, the Cancer Society and so many others stepped up and became my family. This is why it was so easy for me. I never had the time to think or worry about my condition; they dealt with everything.”

She added, “They were so good, they supported me in so many ways, every step of the way. If I didn’t have that support, I don’t know where I would’ve been. Everybody did their part, one dealt with this, while the other dealt with that. The support I had was great and is why I am here today.”

On this note, Cynthia explained that the greatest remedy in times of trouble and sickness is support and love from the persons around you. She noted that with support and assistance from so many persons, she never had the time to worry and wonder what's next or how something will get done.

“Support is important around these times; survival and strength depends on it. When you worry and get filled with fear of what the future holds, it challenges your faith in God and what is in store for you.”

She noted that most times persons use whatever sickness they come across in life as an excuse to give up on life. “It should never be so.”

“I never stopped from work. I wasn't going to be tied down by this sickness. I go to the hospital, get my treatment and then I go about my day as I usually do. No time to be depressed, I'm too blessed.”

In offering advice to persons going through similar situations and others who are battling with illnesses, she said, “Don’t worry about it because whatever is to happen, will happen. God knows your inside, he knows everything. If you’re going to be sick, you’re going to be sick. You just have to be open with yourself.”
