Impassioned Plea Not Enough In Callwood's Case

(PLTM) - The court held its ground following a very passionate plea by Ms. Daphne Stoutt, who begged the court to be lenient by not imposing a custodial sentence on Mr. Glenville Callwood.

Callwood could face time for common assault, threatening language and being armed with an offensive open. The incident involved the accused threatening an officer and his family.

During an appearance before the Magistrate's Court earlier this week, Stoutt, as character witness speaking on behalf of the accused, told the court that he operates as a delivery boy for her florist company and she has been keeping his job for him for the past two months while he has been on remand.

She also told the court that if he is given a fine, she would assist him in paying it.

“If he gets another chance, he will not come back in this court as long as I have something to do with it.”

The court, presided over by Magistrate Tamia Richards, noted that in light of the particulars of his case, the court is leaning towards a custodial sentence.

The court furthered noted that although the plea on his behalf was a very passionate one, the court does not only look out for the best interest of the offenders, but the best interest of the community as well.

“I'll be failing the court if my decision is solely based on an impassioned plea.”

The matter was adjourned until December 6, when he will be sentenced.

According to the details disclosed in an earlier appearance, Callwood wielded a knife at an off duty officer of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and his family on May 16th 2014.

Allegedly, the officer and his family made a stop at First Caribbean Bank in Road Town to do some transactions, which resulted in him being approached and verbally assaulted by the accused.

The court heard that Callwood told the officer, “You police think you bad; you almost lost your life last night. Y’all cops think y’all bad.”

The accused then retrieved a pocket knife from his pocket and held it directly in front the officer’s face and said, “You see this, you see this, you almost lost you life…”

It was also noted that this all occurred in the presence of the officer’s wife and their 4 month old baby, who were sitting at the back of the officer’s vehicle.

Allegedly, out of deep fear for her family’s life, the wife asked the accused to stop, to which he responded by putting the knife in her face and said, “Talk to your man. He almost lost his life. Y’all cops think y’all bad.”
