(PLTM) - Construction of the new Nurse Iris O’Neal Medical Centre on Virgin Gorda resumes with the installation of the steel frames seen in the photograph. This comes after several months of delays.
The government today, Friday, November 25, stated that earlier in the month, Project Contractor Mr. James Todman of James Todman Construction Limited explained that the pause in construction was due to unforeseen difficulties encountered in the procurement of steel frames that meet the design specifications.
The project is set to be fully completed by July of next year.
Hon. Ronnie Skelton, Minister of Health and Social Development previously stated that the revised cost for the project is now $6,086,377.89, which he said represents an increase of $116,690.50 over the original cost.
The additional cost covers rock blasting and minor adjustments to accommodate clinical requirements, among other things.
The ground breaking ceremony took place back in March 2015, two months before the general elections, and the project was expected to be completed within 18 months.
According to the Health Ministry, the new clinic is expected to operate 24 hours per day and offer emergency care, family care, mental and radiology services, among other services.
