Parents Briefed On Continuing Lessons In The Home [Photos Included]

Parents swapped places with their kids last evening, November 29th, as a part of a parent’s workshop, where teachers of the Enid Scatliffe Pre Primary School briefed the adults on the many ways they too can contribute to the educational advancement of their children while at home.

The workshop, titled ‘Care For Me; Teach Me; I Will Learn’, saw the parents engaged in various games and activities adopted by the school, that can also be conducted at home. Parents also received tips and advice given by the teachers.

The event was hosted at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

The workshop, which took the form of a classroom setting, saw each parent sitting in their child’s class with their respective teacher, and being involved in various fun and interactive games, in addition to learning how to prepare for the game and how to conduct them.

(PLTM) - Chair of the event and Principal of the institution, Mrs. Valerie Charles-Welsh shared that the importance of the workshop is to create an opportunity to communicate with the parents, informing them that they have a vital role to play in their child’s education.

“As parents you have to take it seriously. After 4:30 pm, our job is done until the next day; you now become the teacher. There are so many things and ways you can do to teach your children various lessons and key things as they develop, and we are here to assist you. You have to make sure you gain as much as you should.”

In a presentation conducted by Education Officer for Language, Ms. Tania March-Harris, she spoke to the parents about the importance of literacy in the home and ways they can assist their children with their reading and cognitive skills.

“Back then, literacy meant the ability to just read and write. Today, literacy involves the ability to more than read, write, design speak and listen. Being literate is more than just reading the word, it's about reading the world.”

In five easy steps, she encouraged the parents to be consistent with their efforts and remain patient with their children, as their future depends in it.

The steps she shared were to talk to your children, read to and with them, sing along with them, labels in the home and play along with them.

The parents were also advised on how to identify various signs that speak to whether or not their child is at risk for academic challenges, behavioral challenges, as well as social and emotional challenges.

As noted by Ms. Charisse Bynoe, Educational Officer for Special Education, the Ministry relies on the parents, as well as the school to refer their child or student to the developmental programmes initiated by the Ministry of Education, to offer special care and attention to the children with learning disabilities.

Once a child is referred, they are assessed and various strategies and educational techniques would be strategized and initiated to assist with their learning.
