Being An Entrepreneur Not Easy - Vanterpool [Photos Included]

In celebrating the 30th anniversary of his company, Fourth District Representative and Minister with responsibility for Communication and Works, Hon. Mark Vanterpool spoke to existing and budding entrepreneurs, noting that the life path as a tycoon is not an easy one.

K-Mark’s Food Ltd, now in operation as One Mart Food Store, began service in November 1986 from a small location in Road Town, with a staff of six. The business now occupies an over 60,000 sq ft lot, with over 150 employees.

While speaking at an anniversary ceremony last evening, November 30 at his store’s location in Purcell Estate, Hon. Vanterpool stated that his success is as a result of a dream he tackled, and further climbed hills and came through valleys to ensure its survival and existence today.

One Mart celebrates 30 years

(PLTM) - Using his story as a testimony that the life of an entrepreneur is definitely not an easy one, he attested to the fact that, “No successful company In the world has ever stayed on a plateau all the time. There are ups and downs, peaks and valleys.”

“You have mountains to climb, valleys to go down into and you have to have courage to climb out of those valleys if you want to see success.”

He added, “Some years ago when we [One Mart] were down in the trenches, we made decisions that we wish we didn’t make, and as CEO I took full blame for us going down in 2010 and 2011 when we met some stiff competition and made some bad investments. But we got together, buckled down and brought ourselves out of it.”

Hon. Vanterpool continued, “I look back over 30 years and recognize that a dream is a dream, but it can come true, and unless you get up out of your beds from dreaming and get up on your feet and start working, no dream can come to reality. This is what it’s about. K-Mark was my dream that came true.

“I want to give you the encouragement as we have had, to not sit on your laurels and moan and groan, but look for the best ways you can grow and develop, and take your business from great to greater and eventually to the greatest.”
