(PLTM) - Though it may seem to be a very cliché message, the term 'know your status’ was noted to be very relevant and powerful when speaking to persons about their stance as it pertains to the HIV/Aids virus.

According to Mr. Tree Alexander, who served as the Rotary Club of Tortola’s guest speaker today, December 1 in commemoration of World Aids Day, he encouraged the members and their guests to know where they stand against the disease, as that is their first step against the virus.

Alexander, who serves as a social change activist and youth advocate, in addition to being a social worker, counselor and mentor in New York, is in the BVI as part of the commemorative events organised by the BVI Aids Foundation.

On his rounds, Alexander, who is HIV positive, explained that his general message to persons of the BVI is to go beyond the stigma, know their status and take care of themselves, regardless of what the test might say.

“A lot of people are afraid of getting the results or even to be seen going to get tested. The result is only going to benefit you, so taking care of yourself is more important than anything else. I encourage persons to take care of themselves and speak to their doctors.”

He went on to note that persons who are affected by the disease are of the view that as long as they take the medication, everything will be ok. He noted that it is more than that.

“Treatment is not just medication. Treatment is also how I treat myself, the people around me, how I feel about myself, exercise; it's all a part of my individual treatment.”

He added, “When I found out, I wanted to die, but I lived my life. What I needed to do is to understand that my life is not over because of my HIV status. It may evolve a little, but my life is not over.”

Cid Nava, President of the local Aids Foundation shared the same sentiments, noting that, “What's important at the end of the day is that you come and get tested to know your status.”

He noted, “We’ve seen a lot more people coming in this year to get tested; not a lot of people with a positive status. It’s a good thing.”

Alexander also made a visit to the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, where he met and spoke with the students. He was also featured at the annual World AIDS Day programme held at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park today.

“This evening is a celebration of life and in remembrance of persons who passed away from the disease, plus for those who are living with it,” noted Nava
