(PLTM) - A number of the incidents occurring in the communities of the Virgin Islands on a daily basis are tied to the attitudes and mind-set developed in young people, as a result of incidents witnessed at home. This is according to Public Relation Officer of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, Ms. Diane Drayton.

While speaking to parents of the students of the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School, Ms. Drayton shared that in her capacity as PRO, she has been privy to a number of incidents coming out of the home, to which she said, “It’s scary stuff.”

She said, “What we are seeing generally in our society are situations where we are seeing lawlessness and disrespect for authority. We have a problem.”

Ms. Drayton went on to note that these issues stem from the influence of the actions and behaviours demonstrated by the parents in the homes.

“What is happening in the homes is that there is an undermining of authority. Persons have no respect for parents, police officers, teachers, nor for adults. I am afraid that for most parts, it is coming from within our homes and how we interact and treat each other.”

She continued on with an example. “Your girlfriend or wife did something that you don’t like, so you scold her in front of your child(ren) or you call each other names.”

This, she noted as being detrimental to a child’s outlook on life, as they see one parent undermining the character of another parent, teacher and other individuals.

As a solution, Ms. Drayton urged the parents to abstain from having adult conversations in front their children as, “They see this and are heavily influenced by the actions of their parents.”

She added, “Do not have adult conversations around your children. Parents need to make that call right now. Restore authority in your home. They are young now, make sure you don’t destroy the authority of persons by assassinating their character in front of your kids.”
