(PLTM) - Newly elected Virgin Islands Party (VIP) President, Dr. Natalio "Sowande Uhuru" Wheatley believes that the party must attract young people as they begin their journey of rebranding.

Wheatley, who recently joined the party, was elected President, winning against his opponent Preston Stoutt, 53-19 on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at the party's Congress.

"...We have to rebuild the brand of the Virgin Islands Party. Some persons do not see it as a young person's party. We have to be able to attract young people. Young people played an enormous role in the last election, a growing demographic. I believe that we are well poised to attract many young persons to the party by rebranding the party," he told reporters.

The commentator and political activist said, "And of course we need unity in the party. From this point forward we would like to see party members come together to support the party because we have a battle ahead of us for the future of the Virgin Islands...And I will be working closely with the Chairman (Hon. Andrew Fahie)."

Wheatley stated that he endorsed everything that Hon. Fahie spoke to with regards to moving the party forward, including better handling finances, setting up a headquarter and unifying party members.

He noted that every district will be responsible for raising funds.

"Three main things - finances, broaden the base of the party, really have to rebrand the name of the Virgin Islands Party, and unify the party going forward," the VIP President stated.

Meanwhile, asked about whether he felt threatened when the nomination from the floor came for Stoutt, Wheatley said no.

"Well I got a sense that someone might have gotten nominated from the floor, and I think that is better so that I can be given a proper mandate, people can actually make a choice. The contender, Preston Stoutt is somebody I have great respect for."

"And I have actually spoken to him to say that we will be working closely together. He is a man of great ideas, I respect him greatly and I look forward to working with him."

Wheatley has stated that he has become increasingly concerned about the state of the Virgin Islands under the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP).

"Our finances are not being managed well; our districts are suffering; our local people are being passed over for opportunities; crime is threatening our peace, livelihood and economy; and our cost of living is beyond the reach of ordinary residents and citizens."

He said, "The Virgin Islands Party presents the most viable alternative to the governance of the National Democratic Party."
