10 Cases In Two Years - Aids Foundation

The British Virgin Islands has seen a total of 10 persons being affected by the dreadful HIV virus over the past two years, 2015-16, with the affected persons all being between the ages of 21 and 66.

Speaking to Mr. Damion Grange and other members of the BVI HIV-Aids Foundation, BVI Platinum News learned that six persons were affected in 2015, with the remaining four being affected throughout this year, 2016.

Notably, while last year saw more males being affected, this year saw more females, according to the foundation.

The BVI saw its first case of HIV in 1985. Since then, leading up to the end of 2015, a total of 175 cases have been reported to the Ministry of Health.

(PLTM) - As it stands today, a total of 41 persons access treatment for the illness in the BVI.

The President of the foundation stated that the group has seen more and more persons coming out to be tested, and added that very few results come back positive. “That's a good thing.”

“But at the end of the day, what is important is that you come and get tested to know your status.”

To assist in eradicating the existence of the virus in the Territory, the foundation held its annual World Aids Programme last evening, December 1, at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park to further educate and encourage persons on safety and combative methods against the virus, in addition to assistance and counselling.

The event featured Mr. Tree Alexander, who serves as a social change activist and youth advocate, in addition to being a social worker, counselor and mentor in New York.

The event saw participants releasing balloons to honor persons who have died from the virus and persons living with it.
