Girl Guides Celebrate 80 Years With Exhibition [Photos Included]

Persons within the local community now have the pleasure of viewing the history of the Girl Guides in the BVI, who, in commemoration of their 80th anniversary, have launched a temporary exhibition at the 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum.

The exhibit, which was officially declared open last evening, December 2nd, provides vivid stories and the journey of the organisation, dating back to its inception on December 2nd 1936.

In an interview with Commissioner of the organisation, Mrs. Yvette Martin-Stoutt, she told BVI Platinum News that the exhibition is a way for the community and the members of the local chapter to view the commitments and efforts the group has made to the Territory over the years, in addition to bearing proof of the many outstanding females who have been through the guides system.

(PLTM) - “The pictures are depicting our history. Persons can see where we came from and the girls can see how much we’ve grown.”

As a part of the celebration, the group is also preparing to launch a Girls Guides book, which will speak to the history of the organisation in the BVI, in addition to a Girls Guides website.

Penelope Haycraft, who served as Commissioner of the organisation from 1991-1998, expressed that she is excited to see the organisation still standing strong.

“There aren’t too many organisations that keep going year after year after year. A lot of girls go through the system and are huge contributors in the community. It’s good fun and they learn a lot. We teach them to make commitments and contributions to the place where they live, to the community.”

According to the President of the organisation in the BVI, Mrs. Kather Smith, the members are exposed to lessons which encourage good values, discipline, etiquette, the importance of service to others, loyalty to God and country, in addition to various life skills such as sewing, cooking and camping.
