Business was reported to be extremely slow at this year’s staging of Christmas on DeCastro Street, as vendors expressed that persons just aren’t as cultural as they were before.
The event officially launched last evening, December 2 on DeCastro Street, Road Town.
As usual, the annual Christmas event attracted vendors from various backgrounds, who make available a wide range of products, including locally made juices, wines, rum cakes, food, toys, gift assortments and many more.
In speaking to many of the vendors, they explained to BVI Platinum News that persons are not interested in the cultural element of Christmas anymore, and this plays a huge part in their sales.
(PLTM) - “I have local juices. These are always a hit at Christmas time, but times change and people want what’s in, like the sodas,” expressed one vendor.
Cheryl Winter, who has been participating in the event for the last 10 years, also expressed that business is at an all-time low this year, in comparison to previous years.
“This year is the worst. It’s not the location, it’s the support from the community.”
Despite the low sales, all the vendors noted that their participation in the event is a tradition as they enjoy Christmas and know their products are a big part of Virgin Islands tradition.
“I love being here. I sell toys every year here and it's just a joy for me seeing the expression on the children's faces when they see something they like. I love Christmas," said another vendor.
