(PLTM) - As a combative effort against the many health plagues of the Territory, the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) hosted a Health Fair, to provide checks ups and relevant information to the students of the institution.
The event, which was a collaboration between the campus health services and the counselling services, was held on the college’s compound on December 1.
The fair featured health checks and tips on healthy eating and lifestyle practices, where representatives from the Gender Affairs, BVI Diabetes Association, BVI Community Mental Health and the BVI Red Cross were on hand to provide information.
The keynote speaker of the event was Mr. Tree Alexander, an HIV survivor, motivational speaker and Prison Linkage Specialist, who shared his story of how he contracted the virus, how he has been able to cope with the stigmatism of having HIV by moving past the discrimination and breaking free of the negativity by changing peoples’ perception.
Alexander spared no details as he reflected on his life to the 12th Grade students of the Elmore Stoutt High School and to the faculty, staff and students of the college.
According to college officials, the purpose behind the health fair was to address some of the crises affecting the community, but more importantly, to take action and educate individuals about the health perils in their neighbourhoods and surrounding neighbourhoods. Further, to provide assistance in seeking solutions so that they make the right choices in having a healthy life.
