Staff members of the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), whose actions are not aligned with the vision of the authority and the Ministry of Health on a whole, risk the misfortune of being quickly transferred elsewhere.

In celebration of the opening of the long awaited Medical Imaging Unit at the Peebles Hospital today, December 9, Minister with responsibility for Health, Hon. Ronnie Skelton stated that Chairman of the Authority, Bishop John I. Cline have already been instructed to rid the premises of persons who are not fulfilling their assigned duties efficiently.

(PLTM) - He noted that his intentions of such an order, was made on the premises of advancing the health care industry in the Territory, and to provide quality service to the people of the Virgin Islands.

“All who are working in this facility need to do what they need to do. I have charged the Chairman, who is not doing their work, he has my blessings to transfer them, move them out. So he is aware of what we expect of this facility.”

He added, “The health of the people of the Virgin Islands cannot be left for people who do not care, so we need to have that corrected.”

Hon. Skelton went on to express his excitement to finally opening the Imaging Unit, which he deems is long overdue.

“I don’t like to waste a lot of time, I like to see things done quickly. I wish it was done a year ago, but I understand the difficulties, not that I accept them, but I do understand the difficulties experienced.”

The new unit is equipped with a state-of-the art MRI and CT Scanners, X-ray Machines and Digital Mammogram and Ultra Sound machines.

Delving into the finances of the Unit, Chief of Medical Staff at the Hospital, Dr. June Samuels disclosed that all the equipment within the division, carries a value of over $5M, but noted that the authority was lucky enough to negotiate the price down to $2.5M.

She added that $1.4M was contributed by the BVI Social Security Board, with the remainder being made available by the Ministry.

“This advancement allows us to not only provide efficient care, but it allows us to expand the range of services we are able to offer," Samuels said.

With similar sentiments, BVIHSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Paula Chester-Cumberbatch noted that the new facility is an outstanding example of the authority’s commitment to healthcare in the BVI.

“The Unit signifies a continuation of the positive expansion of clinical services and the advancing of the authority’s mission to provide leading services for the people of the BVI. We care that the imaging services we deliver are accurate, safely conducted and quickly reported," the CEO stated.
