(PLTM) - Arguing that the Chinese are known to do quality work, Premier Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith has defended his government's decision to choose a Chinese firm to expand the T.B. Lettsome International Airport at Beef Island.

However, Premier Smith told BVI Platinum News that government is aware of concerns expressed, hence, they do intend to negotiate a good deal with the company, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC).

"The Chinese have been shown to do good work; there are some concerns, but this is why you negotiate and determine what you want," he said on Friday, January 13.

The Finance Minister indicated that government has not started negotiation talks with the company as yet. He was also asked about returning to the public for input before the deal is inked.

"...That negotiation has not started as yet…We will come back to the public before the process is still ongoing...The public will be informed...It’s a process that we are going through…I cannot tell you how soon the discussions will start," he said.

The company's bid to develop the airport is $153M, with possible cost variations.

When pressed on how government intends to finance the project, Premier Smith said, "You will hear more on that in the budget." Budget day is today, January 16.

The Premier was also asked about the perceived bad timing of the project, when government's finances are not stable.

"...The finances of the country are ok," Premier Smith stated.

He was then asked where are the financial audits. "The audits are coming...I will be speaking on that in the budget address on Monday."

Premier Smith reminded that Deputy Premier, Hon. Dr. Kedrick Pickering has been open with the project and has been giving regular updates in the House of Assembly with various statements over the years.

A week after government chose the Chinese firm, government issued a press release on its decision during the Christmas holidays.
