(PLTM) - The BVI Autism Centre benefited from a generous donation of a brand new vehicle from the Rotary Club of Tortola.
The initiative was spearheaded by Past President and First Lady, Mrs. Lorna Smith.
According to the club, in November of last year, Ms. Lorna Dawson, Programme Director of the centre told Mrs. Smith that they were desperately in need of a vehicle.
"Mrs. Smith took on the project. She got the full support of club members, members of the community, members of the Rotary Club of Road Town, Rotary Club Sunrise and Rotaract Club of Tortola, and the vehicle was purchased," the club stated.
The keys for the new vehicle GV0707 were handed over to Ms. Dawson this week.
The BVI Autism Centre provides services for children and adults. They learn skills which help to improve their ability to communicate and respond more appropriately to their surroundings and enhance their social interactions.
Academic skills are emphasised for children, while independent living skills are highlighted for adults.
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them.
It is a spectrum condition, which means that while all people with autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways.
