Shameful

A visit to the Greenland field, situated in the Eighth District on the eastern end of the island, can only be described as shameful, as one is greeted with a field that is falling apart, a few short years after government pumped a significant amount of capital into rehabilitation works.

A facility which cost tax payers close to $1M, was reopened back in October 2012, an achievement the National Democratic Party (NDP) boasted about after the field was left in what they termed a "lump of dirt" by the former government.

(PLTM) - However, fast forward some four years later, the field quickly regressed and begs numerous questions about the maintenance of the facility, which falls under the purview of the BVI Recreation Trust.

Broken inner fences, overgrown bush, broken and dilapidated bleachers, tall grass which appears to have overtaken much of the field and trash from past events has built up.

Weeks after the field was reopened, in November 2012 the basket court was vandalized; however the court appears to be the only portion of the facility that has held up.

The BVI Recreation Trust falls under the Ministry of Education and Culture. Efforts to contact Chairman Mr. Roy Barry for a comment proved futile.

Government had indicated plans to carry out more works on the field, as only phase 1 has been completed. But from the current poor condition, renovations will have to take place before another phase is to be embarked upon.
