(PLTM) - Commissioner of Inland Revenue, Mrs. Karen Smith-Aaron is urging all non-compliant taxpayers to file their outstanding 2017 monthly returns by April, as failure to do so will result in legal action being taken to recover all outstanding taxes due.

According to government, the Inland Revenue Department, the agency responsible to the Government of the Virgin Islands for the collection of taxes, is urging taxpayers to remain compliant with the tax schedule.

Smith-Aaron stated that in accordance with the Tax Legislation, any taxpayer who fails to pay to the Commissioner taxes due to the Government of the Virgin Islands, is guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine and/or imprisonment.

These taxes include but are not limited to Payroll Tax, Self-Drive Motor Vehicle (rental) Tax and Hotel Accommodation Tax.

Self-Drive Motor Vehicle Tax and Hotel Accommodation Tax are due monthly and must be received by the 15th of the following month. Payroll Tax is also due monthly and must be received by the 21st of the following month.

Penalties and interest are applied for late payment or non-payment of taxes due.

Delinquent taxpayers are requested to contact the department’s offices at 1 (284) 468-2155 in Road Town or 1 (284) 495-6545 in Virgin Gorda to make an appointment to know your tax status.

Installment agreements can be arranged for the payment of the outstanding taxes.

Additionally, during the period March 2017 to June 2017, there will be an amnesty on penalties and interest, meaning that all interest and penalties incurred prior to 2017 will be waived.
