50 Years Not 50 Weeks

Boasting of the journey of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, in addition to its advancements and experience in a number of fields, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Michael Matthews pointed out that 50 years is not 50 weeks. Commissioner Matthews spoke earlier today, February 27, at the unveiling of the anniversary plaque and celebratory luncheon hosted at the Road Town Police Station, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the force becoming an independent constabulary body. Speaking with BVI Platinum News, the Commissioner said, “It’s not just marking the independence of the force from the Leeward Islands to constabulary state, but what it is really marking is the history of the officers and the staff and service they provide to communities for the past 50 years.”

(PLTM) - He went on to note that as a result of the diligent work of the local force, the British Virgin Island is undoubtedly the safest Territory in the Caribbean region. “I said earlier, I say this without any cause for concern, we are the safest Territory in the Caribbean and we intend to remain that way. For the last 50 years, we have been the safest in the Caribbean because of the efforts of the people and the force.” He added, “And that’s what we are recognizing today.” Along with the Commissioner and other senior officers, retired officers were also on hand to celebrate with the force. Commissioner Matthews said, “This isn’t about just recognizing what’s happening here and now, it’s how we got there. We have retired officers still living in our communities, so it’s right and proper that they get recognized. It’s wonderful that we are still able to link with our past [officers] and talk about the future.” The plaque, according to the Commissioner, stands as a testament to remind persons of the history of the force. “It serves as a constant reminder for all the officers to come, that this is history,” he noted, adding that it also stands as the legacy they should try to uphold.
