(PLTM) - Nelda Huggins goes down in history as the first female sprinter from the British Virgin Islands to win an individual title at the collegiate level in the USA.
Over the weekend, March 4, Huggins won the 60m dash at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Championships with a time of 7.31 seconds. The meet was held at the Pittsburg State University in Kansas.
This time also records a new personal best for the athlete, who is a freshman at Iowa Central College.
Huggins went on to secure second place in the 200 meter with a time of 23.79 seconds, behind Tobagonnian Zakiya Denoon of Monroe College, a former Carifta Games rival.
On the topic of winning titles, Jonel Lacey of the BVI and her 4x400m relay team from Albany University secured 6th place at the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Her team’s performance was able to garner enough points to assist the university in winning the championship title.
