$130K Pumped Into VG Fest; Jah Cure, Destra To Headline

(PLTM) - Government has invested approximately $130,000 into this year’s Virgin Gorda Festival. This was confirmed by the Minister of Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn while speaking at a press conference earlier today, march 23 in Virgin Gorda. The Minister, along with the recently appointed Chairman of the Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee, Mr. Trefor Grant; Chairperson of the Virgin Gorda Festival Committee, Ms. Sasha Flax; and Ninth District Representative, Hon. Hubert O'Neal launched the 50th anniversary of Virgin Gorda Easter Festival and the annual Spanish Town Fisherman’s Jamboree, and officially released the festivity’s line-up. In brief remarks, Minister Walwyn stated that in an effort to accommodate additional activities and highlights for this year’s golden jubilee celebration for the Virgin Gorda Festival, the government increased this year’s subvention by 50%. “What I would say is that the contribution by the government is significant…I would tell you that when I became Minister of Culture, the subvention given to the VG Festival Committee increased by 40% and it increased this year by 50% of the original figure to accommodate the golden jubilee.” He said, “It was $60,000 when I came in and we raised it to a $100,000, and now we are adding 50% of the original figure.” In response to a question that sought confirmation as to whether or not the figure is $130,000, the Minster said, “I’ll put a star in your book.” VG Fest Lineup The much anticipated lineup for the festival was also revealed, with Jah Cure and Destra named as the headliners for this year’s grand celebration. The festivities will officially kick off on Saturday, April 15 with the 21st annual Fisherman’s Jamboree at Mermaid Dockside. The day will also see a food fair and a concert later the evening at the Bernice Sprauve Festival Village with Sista Joyce, Hardcore Band, VIBE, Stylee Band, Rock City and Jah Cure. On April 16th, the day gives way for the Lion’s Club Easter Egg Hunt at the Walter Recreational Park, a Wet Fete at St. Thomas Bay, Calypso Show at the village with eight local contenders, and then a concert with Destra, Queen Shereene, Tina and a surprise act. The final day, April 17th, the festival will host their annual Rise and Shine Tramp, followed by their Easter Monday Parade. It all culminates with the final concert featuring Elvis White Band, OMG Band, It’s a Secreat Band featuring Claudette Peters and Asa Banton.
