Not Forgotten

(PLTM) - After waiting close to fifty years to be recognized for her contributions to the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival, Mrs. Bernice Sprauve has now convinced herself that she was never forgotten, it was just not her time.

Mrs. Sprauve’s comments are in light of her being honored for this year’s Silver Jubilee celebration of the festival, with the festival village being named in her honor---Bernice Sprauve Festival Village.

Speaking with BVI Platinum News, Mrs. Sprauve, who is one of the founding members for the festival, shared that for years she stood on the sidelines witnessing others being honored and wondered where her flowers were.

“I always told myself, it seems like they forgot about me, because no one remembered to name it [festival village] after me.”

She added, “I smiled to myself and let the wind blow over it. I said nothing about it because if I’m forgotten, I’m forgotten. I can’t do anything about that."

All the other founding members have been honored in years gone.

Now being honored, Mrs. Sprauve said it was God’s plan to reserve her for the 50th year celebration.

“I always thought I was forgotten, but God waited for the Silver Jubilee year to give me my rose. I feel proud that I’m now being recognized. I said probably the lord was letting my name stay aside until this occasion.”

While speaking earlier this week, Minister of Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn said that it was only recently discovered that Ms. Sprauve was the only one of the founding members who was not honored.

Ignore Confusion

Subsequent to the announcement of Ms. Sprauve being honored, confusion brewed from misinformation, which alleged that Ms. Sprauve will be this year's only honoree.

As previously reported and clarified by Mr. Trefor Grant, newly appointed Chairman of the Virgin Islands Festivals and Fairs Committee, Mrs. Sprauve along with all the other living founding members of the festival will be honored this year, but the festival village is named in her honor.

“All six are being honored for the 50th year of celebration. The only difference is that the festival village is being named off of Ms. Sprauve,” Grant said at the time.

Ms. Sprauve informed BVI Platinum News that she was aware of the confusion, but chose to ignore it.

“I don’t know why people were upset. I heard about the controversy, but I said well after 50 years of being forgotten, they still have a problem, so I just let it pass by.”

She added, “I let them sort it out themselves and I did not interfere because if I do, it might cause bigger controversy because hurt feelings bring out hurtful things, and I will not want to put a damper on anything pertaining to the festival.”

She stated that she held her peace for the festival’s sake.

“I heard about it and I said nothing, because I don’t want to go back and forth about it, especially at this time when we are celebrating our 50th.”
