(PLTM) - BVIslanders within the Territory and abroad, made their views known on a recently released proposed design of a building for the Elmore Stoutt High School, that is intended to house an auditorium, cafeteria and gymnasium.

Minister of Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn revealed the design on his Facebook page earlier this week, encouraging persons to inform him of their views.

Within the post, Minister Walwyn explained that the building is a part of the overall development plan for the high school.

Noting the importance of such a building, Hon. Walwyn stated, “Students have been having assembly and eating lunch under tents for about a decade. We have to fix this as well.”

The Minister disclosed that the building is expected to be built in the same location as the current staff room, adding that a new staff room will be built on the top floor of the new structure.

“We intend to place this building where the current staff room is, that way both the senior students and junior students would have access to it without the co-mingling."

He added, "Thirty two classrooms are currently being built to be ready in time for September. The overall separation of the school into junior and senior high will call for improved classrooms, improved labs, new furnishing and general improvement to the physical plan.”

“I am determined to improve our school campuses on all our islands in the Territory,” the Minister noted, further expressing that he intends to commence construction of the building very soon.

The photo created much buzz on the social platform, as persons commended the Minister and commented on the design.

“It looks real nice indeed. Looks like it's ready for the 21st century. I would just add some solar panels to the roof and try to make it more eco-friendly, aligned with some green space where the students can learn to cultivate their own community garden. Grow local,” commented one blogger.

Another posted, “Positive thinking. This overall development photo looks fantastic. All successful ventures started with an idea. There is hope with the right backing. I say go for it Minister Walwyn.”

Persons also offered some advice.

“Love the design, however, how about including some classrooms and offices (mainly for P.E. department) and having the building joined to the other major buildings by walk bridges.”

The Minister also saw comments from persons who encouraged him to focus on existing projects and issues, before moving on to another.

“Very good idea I love it but before that is built I would love to see the classrooms where the children spend most of their time learning refurbished or rebuilt. A comfortable learning environment promotes better learning,” said one blogger, while another posted, “Very nice!!!!! What about classrooms for the students that have to go to the college campus for classes and updated classrooms.”

Others said, “The extra classrooms at junior high school and finishing the wall should be a priority right now. The design of the cafe, and gym looks good, but that can be built afterwards. Just my two cent.”

“The auditorium, cafeteria and gymnasium take preference over proper classrooms and adequately trained teachers?”

In December 2016, Minister Walwyn informed BVI Platinum News that the government will be seeking a $6M loan from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to start upgrades at the high school, which includes an auditorium and other amenities. He said that this will form part of the master plan his Ministry has for the school.

"We are hoping to secure a loan with CDB to be able to provide additional classrooms, an auditorium that will have a cafeteria and other improvements at the school. We intend to finish up the wall, improve the entrance to the school and you will see a true separation with the division of junior and seniors."
