(PLTM) - The United States (U.S) Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved BVI Airways' permit application to fly between the U.S and the TB Lettsome International Airport, which will allow for the much anticipated direct flights between Miami and Beef Island.

When contacted, Ms. Sachkia Barnes of Barnes PR, media contact for BVI Airways, said that the approval came on Friday, April 28.

The long awaited approval from the DOT comes following the January operational approval from the United Kingdom's regulatory agency, Air Safety Support International (ASSI).

Barnes confirmed that there are a few other things to iron out before the first flight takes off, but noted that the DOT's approval is a major step.

Previously, Jerry Willoughby – CEO and President of the airline stated that once approved by DOT, FAA and Department of Homeland Security, BVI Airways will be allowed to begin ticket sales and the first official flights can be scheduled.

“We are working as fast as we can to make this happen."

The BVI government has invested some $7M into the start up of the initiative and an additional $207,000.00 to allow for the payment and it's transfer.

The airline is anticipating the commencement of flights next month.

More details on this development to follow.
