(PLTM) - With a tremendous increase in the number of men electing for prostate health check-ups, a call has been made for more women in the British Virgin Islands to be trained in the field. The call, made by the BVI Red Cross, was highlighted to be one of great importance, as the health and the lives of men within the Territory are at stake.

BVI Red Cross is responsible for the Territory’s annual prostate screening, which sees an average of 1000 men a year receiving free prostate check-ups, along with other important tests.

Earlier this month, officials at the Red Cross BVI stated that with the growing numbers, more and more female volunteers are needed to assist.

According to Helen Frett, Director of the branch, since the beginning of the year, the branch has administered free screenings to a total of 728 men across the Territory.

“We deal with men over 40 and now we are asking men 25 years and older to come in and get there screening and health checks."

She added, “We try to open it up to the younger men as well, so that we can capture information on different chronic diseases and lifetime diseases that affect our men.”

This appeal follows a general plea from the body, encouraging more and more professionals to sign up to assist Red Cross in specific areas, such as accounting and marketing.

In an earlier interview with BVI Platinum News, Ms. Frett said, “We need more volunteers; we need persons with different skills. We have a lot of programmes, so we need persons who can fit in here and there, like accountants and people in marketing. You find that I have to do everything, and with other persons, other volunteers, they would assist the movement tremendously.”

She added, “We need persons from various professions to help out in different aspects of the movement.”
