Book Of BVI Economic History Launched

A book, which illustrates the journey of the British Virgin Islands in different fields and sectors, with mention of persons who made indelible marks and contributed to the Territory’s advancement, was launched last evening, June 20, at the Old Government House Museum.

‘Secret Code: British Virgin Islands’ was written by Mrs. Mitsy Ellis-Simpson, local Financial Services Professional, Realtor, Entrepreneur and Humanitarian.

In brief remarks, Mrs. Ellis-Simson disclosed that the name of the book, which has generated much interest, speaks to her revealing the secrets and history of the Virgin Islands. “In terms of what we are about. Our national identity, our governance, our achievers and other aspects of things that make us unique as a country.”

The book was highlighted to be one filled with historical facts and current affairs, that unlock features critical to the economic rise of the Virgin Islands. The book bares information respective to the history, government, economy and the people of the Virgin Islands.

“I have tapped into our social sciences and humanities, providing a glimpse of our paradise, but also taking a statistical approach to other very important topics.”

She noted that the book, which she commenced writing in 2013, is one that the local community and international market can benefit from.

“It was sometime in the Fall of 2013 I felt the need to write a good country book, that would be of benefit to me, my family, the local community, the international market and others. It was more than just writing a book, it was plenty to do with how my life has been shaped academically, career wise and my love for history.”

(PLTM) - Following a brief synopsis provided, the book begins with an historical snapshot of the BVI, from the pre-Columbian era to a nation’s pride, including information on the Territory’s national emblem, which are fundamental to the BVI identity.

The book then presents its main chapters, starting with the governance of the VI, law and order and other vital topics. It also looks at the local legal system in the commercial court division and the international arbitration center, as well as mentions of the financial services sector and tourism, touching on their growth, challenges and the way forward.

Various photos and charts can also be found in the book, to highlight the information it presents.

Christopher Simpson, husband of the author said, “When Mitsy first conceptualized the book, she was adamant that it should capture the VI like no other. It had to present clear and concise facts about the Territory in a thoughtful, analytical, people oriented and in a modern context.”

He said, “It was written from a place of desire to understand the BVI’s national wonders and an economy that has grown over time, matured in certain respects, face challenges, both past and present, but still continue to demonstrate ambition, fortitude and strength.”

The launch, which was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Culture, was noted to be the 27th book launch in the Territory since 2007.

The ceremony also saw book donations to the Ministry of Education and Culture, Department of Culture, Archives Unit and the Library Services Department.
