(PLTM) - Twelve officers of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, who bear the rank of Sergeant, recently completed a two weeks training course in leadership and management, geared towards supporting their rank.

The official closing ceremony for the course was on June 16.

The course, conducted by Mr. Darby Allen, former U.K. police officer and certified trainer, saw the officers covering many subject areas, including interview skills for supervisors, communication skills, transaction and transformation management skills and conflict resolution.

The participants of the course noted the importance of the course, highlighting that they received a greater understanding of their roles as supervisors, the importance of teamwork, the need for change in force’s culture and the benefits of quality leadership in enhancing the organization.

At the closing ceremony, Commissioner of Police, Michael Matthews said the force seeks to provide the skill set necessary for the persons in the rank of sergeant to operate effectively.

“I see sergeants as the most important rank of the Police Force. Yet, some of you have been promoted and asked to do a job without a job description or the prerequisite skills. One of my training priorities since coming to the force has been to provide the leadership and management skills necessary for you to feel valued and respected in your rank and to fulfill your role with confidence.”

A second set of officers began the course this week.
