Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith

(PLTM) - Students of the 2017 graduating class of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), got the message loud and clear from the Premier of the Territory, Hon. Dr. Orlando Smith, who related life with the social media craze, Snapchat.

Premier Smith spoke at the graduation ceremony last evening, June 22, where 159 students officially graduated from the institution.

In brief congratulatory remarks, the Premier expressed that he is aware of the amount of time young people invest into social media, noting that in this era, communicating via social media is a big deal.

To this, he encouraged the graduates to be as unique as their individual handles and snap codes.

“I am aware that one of your favorite past time is communicating via different social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. I know users on Snapchat have a unique snapcode. Consider your identity as your unique snapcode.”

He added, “Be yourself; build upon your unique talents.”

The Premier further advised the students, that unlike social media and social apps, which are equipped with filters and other ways to enhance a picture or video, life is much different.

“Unlike Snapchat where you can use filters to decorate your snaps, life’s journey will not come with filters. You will be faced with many obstacles and challenges. I encourage you to reflect on your perseverance throughout the implementation of the Sixth Form, and let that be encouragement for you during any future challenges you may face.”

He advised the students to make themselves aware of what is happening in the world globally, as a means to constantly educate themselves, and be rounded young persons.

“Become familiar with what is going on globally, pay attention to the news, and I assure you that you will become well-rounded young people, who will be able to dialogue with anyone, even at the highest levels.”

The students were also encouraged to take inspiration from local role models, who have and continue to make contributions to the Territory.

“Be inspired by local role models, who have made significant contributions to our Territory. BVIslanders such as The Honorable Dame Justice Janice Pereira, DBE; Kristin Frazer; Kyron McMaster, and many others. Model yourself on successful people. Keep growing, keep progressing, keep yourself open to learning new things.”
