Not About Doctors, Nurses--BVIHSA Job Fair

The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) held its first annual Career/Job Fair at the Peebles Hospital, today, Friday, June 23, with the hope of attracting locals to fill various positions in the institution.

Mrs. Keshia Davis-Barnes, Training and Development Coordinator, is encouraging persons who submit their resumes to not just focus on the positions of nurses and doctors. She said that there are a wide range of units within the institution.

"We have our corporate division; we have our legal assistant; a lot of administrators on every level; biomedical; engineers; gardeners; maintenance; nurses; doctors; environmental services; dietary; cafeteria; EMTs; accountants; and HR specialists," she told BVI Platinum News.

"So there is a wide variety of jobs here and I think that it is important for us to get out the message that in healthcare, it is not only about being a doctor or a nurse, there are so many different opportunities. Right now we have one of the best IT infrastructure in the Virgin Islands."

(PLTM) - The Health Services Authority currently has over 600 staff members and 12 units.

"We have some vacancies yes, but we want to be able to ask persons to bring in their resume so that we can put them in the areas that they are interested in, and we will be reaching out to persons."

She said, "Coming up in a couple of months we will be opening up our Polyclinic in Virgin Gorda, and we want to make sure we have a great amount of people to be able to fill those positions," Davis-Barnes stated.

The Training and Development Coordinator emphasized that persons who are seeking a job with the institution must be in it for love, and not just a pay cheque.

"The reason we put this career fair on is that we want to be able to introduce health services to the Virgin Islands on a large scale, and be able to educate persons that we have so many different career opportunities within healthcare."

She added, "And be able to show our partnership with HLSCC as we venture out into offering certification in PCA, as a mutual understanding agreement."

The fair commenced from 9:30 am and concludes at 3:00 pm. The next fair is scheduled to take place at the Catholic Community Centre on Virgin Gorda on July 7, at 9:30 am.
