(PLTM) - Communications and Works Minister, Hon. Mark Vanterpool is heading a delegation from the BVI, in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, for the CANTO 33rd Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition.

The conference, which commenced yesterday, July 16, and ends on Wednesday, July 19, includes officials from Government and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).

Following the first round of meetings, Minister Vanterpool said that he hopes that the conference will aid in the BVI's efforts to ensure that local providers step up.

"As Minister for Communications and Works, I was pleased to head the delegation, which included representatives from the Ministry and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission," he said today, Monday, July 17.

"We continue to strive in the Territory, to ensure that our local providers offer the latest and best technology to customers and at an affordable rate."

The BVI is expecting to garner new ideas for policy, regulations and technology from the forums that can be applied in the Territory to enhance the services provided.

Chief Executive Officer of the TRC, Mr. Guy Malone and Hon. Marlon Penn, Junior Minister for Trade and Investment Promotion, are also attending the conference.

Malone said that telecommunication ministers from across the region will be discussing their respective government status and highlighting their future plans for the evolution of telecommunication.

"This is why it is important for us to attend, to gauge where we are positioned to better improve our technologies in the BVI,” Malone explained.

The week is being held under the theme, “Reimagining Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as a Tool for National Growth & Development”.

Topics to be discussed include smart communities: re-imagining the partnership between government and businesses; new strategies in the selling and distribution of spectrum; cyber security and opportunities in the cloud.
