(PLTM) - The national female softball team of the British Virgin Islands has been selected, after a series of training sessions, drills and minor setbacks.

Fifteen females, out of a group of thirty-one, who initially started the training, were successful, and will now represent the BVI from here onward.

The selected players are Che’Vaunne Richardson, Claury Scatliffe, Darier Malone, Denecia Hodge, Donniesha George, Javlyn Frett, Jelisa Potter, Kaynesha Stoutt, Khiayah Doward, Khyra Powell, Kimesha Adams, Makeda Fahie, Shamora Penn, Shanika Forbes and Monet Daly.

Now formed, the team will represent the BVI in the IX Women’s Pan American Softball Championship from August 4 through to August 13 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.

During the competition, the team will go up against twenty other softball teams from various countries, including Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Curacao, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos Islands, United States and Venezuela.

The Pan-American Championship serves as the qualifying event for several major leagues, such as the Pan American Games in Lima 2019, the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla 2018, and the 2018 WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship.

In light of this, the top five teams from the championship games in August, will join Peru in the softball tournament in Lima 2019, and also secure a spot to compete in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship in Chiba, Japan.

The top five teams from the Central American and Caribbean region will join Canada in Barranquilla in 2018.

The Virgin Islands Softball-Baseball Association (VISBA) is confident that the national team will perform in the high ranking percentile of the bunch.

VISBA’s Public Relations Officer, Ms. Shamora Penn said, “The Virgin Islands Softball-Baseball Association is extremely proud of our athletes who worked day in and day out in preparing for this championship.”

The opportunity was made possible with assistance from the BVI Olympic Committee.
