(PLTM) - Persons of the community are calling on BVIslanders, residents and the government, to step up their efforts in protecting local heritage sites and natural habitats, around the British Virgin Islands.

At a recently held town hall meeting, persons expressed their concerns over several sites being dilapidated and destroyed.

They noted that these issues need to be addressed and rectified as soon as possible.

“The protection of our heritage sites is very important,” said Ms. Catherine Smith, who added that matters that lead to the destruction of these sites are not being dealt with.

“Destruction happens on a regular basis. The importance of these sites cannot be underscored. This needs to be addressed.”

Deputy Governor, Mrs. Rosalie Adams also contributed to the argument, stating that local natural habitats around the Territory are being erased.

“What we are finding now is that all our ponds are being filled up and the natural habitats for some of the different animals in the Territory are being erased.”

She added, “There is also quite a bit of pollutant being put into our waters.”

Mrs. Adams indicated that if these problems persist, the Territory is failing, as it relates to its environmental aims.

“This is an area we really need to focus on. We also need to remember that global warming is upon us, and if we continue to full up everything across the coastline, sooner or later, there will be no place for the high-tide to come in.”

This, she indicated, would lead to drastic flooding in businesses and homes situated in the coastal areas of the island.
