(PLTM) - The education sector in the British Virgin Islands is in line for major improvements, with the approval of a whopping $9.28 million loan from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). Information of the approved loan was first disclosed late last week by the CDB.

With this loan, a number of projects and improvements, previously announced by the Minister of Education, Hon. Myron Walwyn, will now be financed and cleared to go.

Such projects include the construction of a multi-purpose complex, new classrooms and other works and enhancements at the Elmore Stoutt High School, in addition to an upgrade of the science and technical and vocation education and training laps at the school.

The total cost of the entire local project to reform the education system is US$13.56 million, to which the Government will contribute $4.27 million.

According to the CDB, the loan is part of the Education Sector Support Project (ESSP), being ran by the bank. This is the first phase of a comprehensive reform of BVI’s education system, they noted.

The overall goals of the ESSP include the improvement of the teaching and learning environment in the BVI, as well as to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the local education system.

The project also aims to provide more gender-responsive psycho-social support to vulnerable and at-risk students.

Division Chief of the Social Sector Division at the CDB, Deidre Clarendon said, “Quality education is critical for addressing poverty, vulnerability and achieving sustainable human development. Through this project, CDB is pleased to be making an investment in improving the quality of education for all students, and in supporting improvements in planning, leadership and delivery of education services, including special education needs programmes.”
