Residents Count Losses After Devastating Flood

Businesses and other structures in the Road Town area are already feeling the strain of expenses they will incur, to address all the damages caused by the floods.

Last evening, August 7, into the early morning of August 8, the Territory experienced great wind, rains and thunderstorms, for close to 20 hours straight. This was caused by a Tropical Wave that passed by the Territory.

The capital was quickly flooded as a result, with water rising close to 5 feet in certain areas.

Speaking with several persons, who were engaged in cleanup efforts today, all informed BVI Platinum News that this is by far the worst they've ever seen, as it relates to the flooding. They highlighted that it is not a cheap fix.

(PLTM) - Dylon Penn, member of The Apostolic Faith Church, in the heart of Road Town, told BVI Platinum News that their building experienced a lot of damages.

"Our building is a couple inches above the ground level and the water got in and was up by couple inches too. It stayed in here for some time, so all our benches and so on are damaged."

"It's going to cost us," Penn said.

He added, "It's real bad for us. It's not the first time we've been flooded, but this is by far the worst."

Penn stated that the extent of the flood and excess dirt may be as a result of unpaved roads and developments happening in the area.

Vanterpool's Pharmacy was also badly affected.

According to a store clerk, the business place saw about an inch and a half of water, that seeped under the doors.

Similarly, The Shoe Store, adjacent Digicel's flagship store, also saw a great deal of damage.

"Shoes, carpet, everything damaged man; this ain't gonna be cheap."

Persons continue their part to clean, as efforts are also being made by local response teams, which include the Royal Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Services, Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, and others, within Road Town and on the eastern and western ends of the island.
