(PLTM) - Gabriela Chichester of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) has topped the Virgin Islands with passes in 10 CSEC subjects and 2 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) subjects, according to information confirmed by BVI Platinum News.

This is the first batch of 12-Graders to sit the CXC examinations since Government added a sixth year at the high school level. It is also the first time that CAPE was offered at ESHS, and some 26 students took advantage of this, with 5 registering to sit two subjects.

BVI Platinum News has also confirmed that other top performers include Keilin Araujo, Kyrah Maduro and Jeaneah Chinnery of ESHS, who passed 10 CSEC subjects and 1 CAPE subject, and Majesty Glasgow with 9 CSEC and 2 CAPE passes.

St. Georges Secondary School student, Chris-Tiann Roberts successfully completed 12 CSEC subjects with 11 Grade Ones.

Minister of Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn noted that as they analyse the 2017 CSEC results, the Ministry of Education realizes that there is a lot of work still to be done to ensure that the results will continue to improve.

He thanked principals, teachers and parents for their continued hard work, dedication and commitment, and extended congratulations to those candidates who were successful at the CSEC examinations.

Anticipated More Enrolment

Meanwhile, Minister Walwyn said that he had anticipated that more students would have sat the examinations.

"We anticipated that the June, 2017 sitting would have an increase enrolment and an increase in the number of passes overall in the territory over 2016..."

He said nevertheless they can boast of the students outstanding performance in CSEC examinations and for the very first time in the history of the Virgin Islands, Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) at the secondary level.

This year, a total of 477 candidates registered for 1 or more subjects for the June, 2017 CSEC examinations. Of the total, 403 were students within the Territory’s public secondary schools, 67 from private secondary schools and 7 were private independent entries.

A total of 29 subjects were written by candidates. Grades 1, 2, and 3 were earned in 86% of the subjects entered. Of the 29 subjects written: 8 subjects received 100% passes. They are Theatre Arts, Physical Education, Electronics, Technical Drawing, Food and Nutrition, Office Administration, Industrial Technology (Building) and Agricultural Science.

Subjects with passes between 90 to 99% are English Language – 90%, Biology – 93%, Integrated Science- 97%, and Electronic Document Preparation Management – 96%, Caribbean History, 93%, and Principles of Business with 99%.

The subjects with the highest number of entries were English Language with 331, Mathematics with 343, EDPM with 203 and Human and Social Biology with 134 entries. 25% of all subject entries were Grade ones, 31% were Grade twos and 29% were Grade threes.

Minister Walwyn said that a comparison of the two core subjects of Mathematics and English Language shows that of the 331 students who sat the English Language examination, 288 candidates received Grades 1 to 3 passes.

"This indicates a pass rate of 90.84% with 30% of the students receiving Grade 1 passes. Of the 343 candidates who sat the Mathematics examinations, 231 candidates received Grades 1 – 3 passes; this indicates a pass rate of 70.86%. 47 candidates which is 14% received Grade 1 passes," he explained.

Of the 477 candidates who wrote the examinations this year, one candidate wrote and was successful in 12 subjects, 4 candidates wrote 11 subjects, 14 candidates did 10 subjects, 26 candidates passed 9 subjects, 34 candidates passed 8 subjects and 40 candidates passed 7 subjects.
