(PLTM) - On Thursday, September 14, an operation run by the British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands Police Officers, alongside the British Royal Marines and Police, resulted in the capture of over 100 escaped criminals from the Balsam Ghut prison.

Governor Gus Jaspert, who made the announcement late this evening, September 14, stated that the government of the British Virgin Islands is extremely grateful to the police and military personnel for their tireless efforts, which have today resulted in a thorough and extremely successful operation.

"I extend our gratitude to the UK and Cayman Islands governments for their provision of personnel on the ground here, helping to ensure the safety and security of all British Virgin Islanders."

He said, "This signals a huge step in all of our efforts to rebuild this fantastic Territory."

The inmates escaped following the passage of Hurricane Irma on September 6.

The Governor did not indicate whether this means that all the inmates have been accounted for, but earlier reports had indicated that just over 120 prisoners had escaped.

Food, water and supplies are not the only things residents of the Virgin Islands are worried about, in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, as just over 120 prisoners, who were housed at Her Majesty’s Prison at Balsum Ghut, are now freely roaming the streets.

Like most properties across the Territory, the prison was decimated by the category 5 storm, resulting in the prisoners returning to the community.

Local officials have not communicated the threat of prisoners to residents, but have imposed a curfew, and requested security assistance from the United Kingdom.

Residents have told BVI Platinum News that they have recognized some of the inmates and described them as helpful, assisting with clearing debris. Other residents have shared that some prisoners are part of the widespread looting and other criminal activities that are taking place.

U.K troops have started to arrive to assist local officials restore law and order.
