(PLTM) - The United Kingdom (UK) military, along with police officers, will be enforcing the extended curfew as the Territory prepares for the passage of Hurricane Maria.

Speaking at a joint press conference held this morning, September 18, Governor Gus Jaspert said that the Territory has now switched into preparation mode for the next hurricane, which is forecast to pass between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

However, he said that following the passage, they will bounce back into recovery mode.

The Governor told reporters, that the important thing at this moment is to clear the ghuts; remove debris; have safe shelters; and for persons to abide by the curfew. He said that there are enough relief supplies.

The curfew has been extended from 6:00 pm this evening until an all clear is given.

"The bigger message is that we are asking for the community to help. This is a time when people need to prepare and they need to help us prepare. So I am asking every single resident to support, voluntarily helping to clear the ghuts, clear the debris and support getting into safe shelters," he said.

Governor Jaspert added, "The first thing is that it is an individual responsibility for everybody out there to help the Territory...We do now have a lot of police officers in the Territory backed up by the (UK) military; they will be out enforcing the curfew as they are required, but I urge people to support our efforts and abide by the curfew."

The Governor was asked what will be done to ensure that persons adhere to the curfew, since many individuals have not done so in the past.

"There are a lot of military who are stopping cars and the Commissioner (of Police) has been giving us a daily report, and he has been telling us that the level of crimes are reducing...But it is an offence to break the curfew and the police are taking evidence of anyone committing an offence..."

Premier Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith also mentioned that there are emergency workers and persons who are assisting with clearing debris, who are given clearance to be on the road.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force is also receiving assistance from UK police officers and officers from Cayman Islands.
