(PLTM) - With the threat of Hurricane Maria hours away, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) is making checks on the various shelters, to ensure they are safe for occupants.

Ms. Sharleen DaBreo, Director of DDM, said that the 11 shelters that were named earlier are still in operation, however, the necessary checks on those buildings will be done today, and a list will be provided before the end of the day.

"What we are doing today is that we are going to go to every single one of those facilities to check the structure, public health conditions, the conditions of individuals at those shelters," she told the media in response to questions today, September 18.

"If we need to make a decision to move them (residents) to other safer locations, that decision will be made today. So the final listing of the shelters to support Maria’s response will be issued this afternoon."

Approximately 351 persons are being accommodated in temporary shelters throughout the Territory.

The Multi Purpose Sports Complex has been named as one of the main shelters.

Premier Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith has urged that for the remainder of today, communities should organise and assist the Department of Waste Management in cleaning up as much of the debris as possible.

"Many homes are exposed and flying debris can cause greater damage to property and individuals. I also ask our communities to look out for neighbours that might be elderly and need assistance, or those whose homes may have been severely damaged."

He continued. "If you are uncertain that you will be safe in your home, I strongly encourage you to get to a shelter where you and your family will be secure."
