(PLTM) - Premier Hon. Dr D. Orlando Smith said the BVI has the full suppport of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) as the Territory continues to rebuild its economy and infrastructure.

The Premier's statement follows a high level meeting held on October 13, where Premier Smith and other members of the government met with President of the CDB, Mr. Warren Smith and other senior bank staff.

A press statement from the government today, October 18, stated that the two groups discussed financing options for the Territory to rebuild and rehabilitate its infrastructure after the widespread damage caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria.

“We had very productive discussions on the ways in which reconstruction can be financed, both short and long-term. I am pleased we have the full-support of the CDB”, said Premier Smith who is also the Territory's Finance Minister.

The statement from the government said the two groups also emphasised the importance of building back better to strengthen the resilience of the BVI for future weather events caused by climate change.

The government's meeting with the CDB took place last weekend when Premier Smith attended a World Bank meeting in Washington D.C, United States.

The Premier was expected to sensitize the World Bank officials about the BVI's plight following hurricane Irma even though the country is not eligible for much financial aid from international donors because of its status as a middle income earning country.

The government has not said whether it has received any commitments for loans or aid from the CDB or any donor that was present at the meeting.
