(PLTM) - BVI residents could get more time to import from a list of items that was declared duty-free by the government, shortly after Hurricane Irma.

The government declared the duty-free list, which includes vehicles and clothes, to allow residents and businesses to import much needed relief items after the category five storm in September.

Premier, Hon. Dr. D. Orlando Smith had said the short term relief would end on December 21, 2017.

When the Premier addressed the Territory during a radio program on ZBVI yesterday, November 19, he was asked whether the government is considering an extension of the duty-free list.

In response, the Premier said, "I did say that we would review it in a timely manner...and we will be reviewing it, so chances are there will be an extension. I am not sure what areas, but we will be reviewing it shortly and then we will be able to make a statement."

He continued by explaining that an extension of the concessions would be beneficial to many persons who are have not yet received funds to import rebuilding items.

"There were several reasons why people were suggesting that we renew it; for example, because of the delay in getting the payment from insurance companies it will take a little longer for them to order the materials. In fact, some people have not been paid as yet, because it's a lot of work for the insurance companies and so they will not be able to receive their supplies at the end of the year. So these are factors that we have to take into consideration," Premier Smith explained.

In addition to vehicles and clothes, other items on the duty-free list include food and water; building material; electrical fixtures and materials; plumbing fixtures and materials; household furniture, furnishings and appliances; pharmaceuticals; generators; and cleaning supplies.

Some persons had said the government should not have included some items on the list as that denies the country of much-needed funds required to pay government's bills.

However, during the radio program yesterday, Premier Smith explained that allowing duty-free importation stimulates the BVI economy.

"The more we can encourage them to get started, get the building supplies, that itself will jump start the economy and result in more revenues for government as well. Therefore, the spinoff effect of assisting people to bring in their items, that itself will stir the economy and improve the government coffers as well," Premier Smith stated.
